When you are streaming music on a music streaming platform, what is something you deem essential? Is it the quality of the sound? The content library? Or do you just want the best bang for your buck?
Well, whatever is important to you, I have compared them all for the de facto choice of music streaming platforms: Apple Music and Spotify.
Let me share my findings with you so that you can make a sound decision on which one to choose.
Sound Quality
Do you need a simple and to-the-point answer? Well, Apple Music is ahead in the quality game.
Now, let’s dive into some of the details.
Spotify is there just for your casual listeners, who don’t care about the frills of the sound quality and the engineering behind the sound. On the flip side, Apple Music has both options available – if you want to listen to high-quality sound, you can. If you don’t want to, you can listen to the default quality (and save data thereby).
Apple Music comes with two types of sound qualities: 16-bit/44.1kHz and 24-bit/192kHz.
The former is the CD-quality audio, which you can find on Spotify. While the other 192kHz can’t be found on Spotify. The 192kHz is tailored for the sound geeks who have high-end equipment to seamlessly enjoy the depth of the sounds created by the musicians.
Oh, and it has that Dolby Surround Sound, which feels like the sound is coming from a different corner of the room. Not all the tracks have that Dolby Sound, but a lot of them do.
To be honest, for an average Joe, this doesn’t matter because first, they would need the right equipment that can play the lossless audio from Apple Music, and then they would need high-speed fiber internet that can play that quality of sound seamlessly.
So, if you are one of those who adore great quality in sound, Apple Music is for you.
Content Library
Next up is the library of content. The quick answer to this is that the content library in Spotify is much larger and more diverse.
Let me explain the difference: if music is the only thing you listen to, there might not be any difference between the two. Both of them have around 100 million tracks.
Now, where the difference lies is the diversity. Spotify has a huge library of podcasts and audiobooks that you won’t find on the competitor’s platform. While Apple’s Music still has a respectable library, it is not that huge.
In simple words, if you need a huge and diverse library of content that you can listen to, Spotify is the way to go.
Value for Money
Let me quickly tell you the winner here: it’s surprisingly Apple Music. This answer is based on which is cheaper, and Apple Music is a dollar cheaper than Spotify.
For an individual plan, Spotify costs $12 a month, whereas Apple Music costs $11 a month.
Now, which one should you get is totally based on your subjective preferences. Both of them are great in their own way.
However, there might be a bummer for those folks looking for free options. Apple Music doesn’t have a free plan. On the flip side, Spotify offers a free plan with ads and limited skips. I have used the free version of Spotify, and it isn’t all bad if you need to casually listen to music once in a while.
App Experience
This might be one of the most important factors when choosing a music streaming app that most people ignore. You will be interacting a lot with the app interface, so it has to be good.
I have tried both, and I prefer the app layout of Spotify. It is simple to navigate, and navigating between the different features of the app is simple.
It might just be me, but it is what I think.
On the flip side, the app interface on Apple Music is not all bad. It is easy to navigate as well, but I just prefer Spotify more than Apple Music. Just install both the apps, and check which one you like more than the other.
Addressing the elephant in the room: which one of the apps is worth paying for the subscription?
If I had to choose one, it would be Spotify because of its diversity in content selection. However, Apple Music is not a bad option by any means, especially if you use Apple devices.
